Course on SDH and PHC at the Pemba's Health Training Centre

From September 21st to 24th, 2021, medicusmundi organized a course for 15 teachers from the Pemba's Health Training Centre.

Between September 21st and 24th, 2021 medicusmundi, through the consultant Juliana García Salinero, organized a course for 15 teachers (9 women and 6 men) from the Pemba's Health Training Centre, based on the social determinants of health (SDH) and primary health care (PHC), in order for these teachers to expand their knowledge and reflections and be able to transmit them to their students during the replica session of this course that will be organized the next two weeks.

On this occasion, teachers in the areas of Maternal and Child Health, General Medicine, Nursing, Nutrition, Preventive Medicine and Environmental Sanitation and Psychology, among others, benefited from this course.

Throughout these four days of training, topics such as basic concepts of public health, health understood as a human right, health inequalities, social determinants of health and the current approach to primary health care in Mozambique were addressed. All these topics were discussed in a dynamic way, with many spaces for reflection, group exercises, documentaries, role-playing activities and knowledge transmission methodologies to facilitate the replication of knowledge from teachers to students.

The training was characterized by the high participation of the students who showed great interest in the topics addressed, because according to them, these are topics that everyone knew about but had never dealt with in depth and that are fundamental to transmit the importance of fighting for a quality and public health among future health professionals.

In the first training day there was also space to present the platform “Alliance for Health”, an initiative of medicusmundi that currently includes ten organizations and several activists and from which the first School of Health Activism in Mozambique has been launched, with courses such as on nutrition from the perspective of social determinants of health or digital activism, among others.

This space was also used to share with the Pemba's Health Training Centre the preliminary results of the anthropological research on "the social determinants that influence chronic malnutrition in the districts of Ancuabe, Balama, Montepuez and Namuno" carried out by the consulting team Verde Azul, with the joint support of medicusmundi and Médicos del Mundo and the financing of the Spanish Cooperation (AECID), which became a practical example extracted from the context itself that reflected several of the contents of the training and that, therefore, generated a very interesting debate space between the participants.

At the end of the training, the participants recognized that the content and the applied methodology had motivated them to continue working for the defence and promotion of primary health care, as well as the inclusion of the social determinants of health, and they assumed the witness of transmitting it among their classmates and students.

This initiative has the financial support of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and other co-financers.
